The healthy range spans a surprisingly wide weight band — for a 175 cm adult, that is 56.7 kg to 76.3 kg. BMI is a valuable population-level screening metric, but it has well-documented limitations at the individual level. Understanding these limitations is important when interpreting your BMI Visualizer result:
Muscle mass is invisible to BMI. A highly trained athlete carrying 10 kg more muscle than an average person of the same height will have a higher BMI despite having very low body fat. Conversely, a person described as "skinny fat" — low muscle, high fat — may show a healthy BMI whilst carrying metabolically dangerous visceral fat.
Fat distribution matters enormously. Central adiposity (fat stored around the abdomen) poses far greater cardiovascular and metabolic risk than the same amount of fat stored subcutaneously on the hips and thighs. A waist circumference above 94 cm in men and 80 cm in women is an NHS-recognised independent risk marker, regardless of BMI.
Ethnicity affects cut-offs. People of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage face elevated diabetes and cardiovascular risk at lower BMI values — the NHS recommends an adjusted "overweight" threshold of BMI 23 for South Asian adults, versus the standard 25.
Age shifts body composition. As we age, we typically lose muscle and gain fat even at a stable BMI — a process called sarcopenic obesity. Older adults may appear within a healthy BMI range whilst carrying clinically significant excess fat and deficient muscle mass.
